All of the ironstone mines are deliberately made inaccessible after closure.

This is because ironstone reacts with the air in the mine, and reduces the oxygen level, often to a level below that required to sustain life.

Furthermore, carbon dioxide can build up, to levels which will prove fatal. Carbon dioxide is extremely dangerous because high levels give no warning.

Entering ironstone mines without the necessary gas monitoring equipment is likely to result in death.
